Established in 1977 and Certified Organic 2014, our vineyards are located on historic Bainbridge Island farmland.
Our farm
Bainbridge Vineyards is a 15 acre farm situated within a 40 acre historic boundary, which is protected for farming in its perpetuity. We are located on Bainbridge Island, at just 245 feet above sea level, in the temperate- maritime climate of Puget Sound. Averaging 37 inches of rainfall a year, cool climate vitis vinifera varietals thrive here; compared to notable European grape growing regions. Our soils are glacial till over a semi- permeable cemented subsoil.
The entire property is the longest and continuous use of agriculture in Kitsap County, since 1928. It is farmed by a collective of local farmers, organically. There are three ponds located on the property, which are home to many resident and migratory birds throughout the year. One pond was hand dug by the Suyematsu family, and is still used today for irrigating our vineyards when necessary. Manzanita Creek runs through the property, and we are a Certified Wildlife Sanctuary. The flora that are cultivated here and the fauna that call this place home create biodiversity. Many of our farming practices revolve around being stewards of the land.
Our founder Gerard Bentryn and original land owner and farmer Akio Suyematsu, first planted Müller- Thurgau together 1977 on a south facing slope, at the north-west corner of the property. You first see these 43 year old vines as you drive along Day Road. Following after, Madeleine Angevine and Pinot Gris come into view; planted between 1988-90. Bentryn is credited for planting the first vitis vinifera grapes in the Puget Sound region. Our vineyards are all located on the western side of the property, along gently sloping hills, where the best soils are located. You can find our winery, as you drive by our draft horses, towards the end of the long gravel drive.
